The Director of the Law Enforcement Academy shall work under the direction of the Executive Dean of Business, Technology & Public Service, and will provide oversight of the Law Enforcement Academy to include, department budgets, course scheduling, faculty and instructor schedules, assessment, program reviews, course material adoptions, appropriate labs and equipment, marketing, assistance with community networking and trainings, curriculum development, maintaining both P.O.S.T. standards and instructor qualifications, and oversight of the supervision and training of faculty, instructors, and other department employees if necessary. The Director shall maintain commitment to quality instruction, the primary objective of the institution. This leader will demonstrate a strong commitment to the value of diversity among students and staff, as well as sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of PPSC students.

This is a 12-month position. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field from a regional accrediting agency, such as the Higher Learning Commission (Criminal Justice, Criminology, Homeland Security, Emergency Management, etc.)
  • Seven years of law enforcement-related experience
  • Previous POST certification as a peace officer in Colorado or another state
  • Ability to perform required Academy Director responsibilities per Colorado POST guidelines
  • Experience supervising personnel, instructors, or training programs
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Colorado POST rules, academy certification standards, curriculum requirements, and reporting processes
  • Experience working with or within public-sector or higher education institutions

Professional level experience is defined by the Colorado Division of Human Resources: A position that involves the exercise of discretion, analytical skill, judgment, personal accountability, and responsibility for creating, developing, integrating, applying, or sharing an organized body of knowledge.  Colorado revised statute (C.R.S. 24-50-135(1) allows colleges to exempt positions from the State Personnel Classified System that are determined to be professional level work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Education, Leadership, or related field
  • Supervisory-level law enforcement experience (Sergeant or above or equivalent)
  • Prior experience directing, coordinating, or serving in a leadership role within a POST-certified law enforcement academy
  • College-level teaching experience or experience developing POST-approved curriculum
  • Experience with budget management, grants, accreditation, and program assessment
  • Advanced POST, instructor, or leadership certifications (e.g., POST Instructor, Command Staff School, FBI National Academy, or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success in a community college setting

Essential Functions 

  • Oversee and manage standards relating to Colorado POST
  • Coordinate purchasing, receiving, and budgeting with the BTPS division
  • Oversee curriculum and program design to support programs and training
  • Coordinating with community needs for apprenticeship and internship training activities
  • Marketing and program information sessions
  • Faculty, instructor, and employee oversight
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining current law enforcement partnerships
  • Coordinate necessary training schedules with the Colorado Springs Police Department
  • Coordinate class graduation ceremonies
  • Interview student cadet candidates
  • Maintain program and student records per P.O.S.T. requirements
  • Coordination with Prior Learning Assessment
  • Other duties as required or directed by the Division Executive Dean

  • Ability to navigate differences effectively and respectfully in the workplace
  • Must establish clear and logical goals and objectives
  • Responsible for the oversight of all equipment, training needs, and maintaining budgets
  • Responsible for internal planning, administration, program development, and external relations with other program divisions, departments, agencies, and the public stakeholders
  • Reporting to the Law and Public Service advisory board membership
  • Review industry trends, identify employer needs, and program data reports
  • Maintains program needs and communication
  • Assist with student advising when needed
