Retention Practicum Experience

Salary: $20.00 per hour

The part-time Retention Practicum Experience provides direct student support through academic & holistic coaching and retention initiatives, focusing on student success, engagement, and persistence. The practicum experience will facilitate workshops, offer one-on-one coaching, and connect students to campus resources. This position plays a key role in fostering student persistence by promoting effective study habits, time management, and resources utilization. Through collaboration with faculty and staff, the practicum experience will contribute to institutional efforts aimed at improving student outcomes and overall retention rates. 

This is a temporary part-time hourly position, not to exceed 10 hours per week, 100 hours total.   

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current enrolled UCCS student in the Master of Leadership: Emphasis in Student Affairs in Higher Education Program.
  • Commitment to supporting retention efforts for diverse student populations, including first-generation, low-income, non-traditional, and other minoritized students.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Comfortable with learning and using online learning platforms such as EAB Navigate360, Banner, and D2L.

Student Coaching

  • Provide one-on-one coaching to students, assisting with academic skills, study strategies, goal setting, and overcoming personal or academic barriers.
  • Develop & facilitate interactive workshops on time management, note taking techniques, self-advocacy skills in the classroom, test-taking strategies, study group effectiveness, online learning tools, college navigation, and more as needed.
  • Conduct proactive outreach to students referred to retention team via Progress Report Campaign or Referrals.
  • Document student interactions, progress, and referrals in EAB Navigate to measure impact and support data-informed retention efforts.
  • Assist students in developing action plans for academic success and connect them with tutoring, financial aid, advising, counseling, and other resources as needed.
  • Serve as a peer mentor and role model for students by fostering a supportive learning environment.

Collaboration & Institutional Support

  • Work closely with faculty and staff to identify students in need of additional academic support & provide appropriate interventions
  • Engage with common first-year and low passing courses to introduce coaching services and promote workshops.
  • Participate in meetings and trainings with supervisor
  • Assist with data collection and analysis related to student participation, success outcomes, and program effectiveness.
  • Assist with and support online New Student Orientation & New Student Kickoff

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of diverse student populations, including first-generation, low-income, military-affiliated, and non-traditional students, and the barriers they may face in higher education.
  • Familiarity with academic success strategies, including study skills, time management, and goal-setting techniques.
  • Awareness of, or willingness to learn about campus resources such as academic advising, tutoring, financial aid, and other student support services
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to facilitate workshops and present educational material in both individual and group settings
  • Experience with coaching, mentoring, or providing direct student support in an academic setting preferred
  • Excellent organization and time-management skills, with the ability to track student progress, document interactions, and manage multiple tasks efficiently
  • Ability to build rapport with students from diverse backgrounds and create a welcoming, supportive coaching environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to provide students with actionable strategies to overcome academic and personal challenges

Must be a State of Colorado resident or able to relocate to Colorado prior to first date of employment.  All work must be performed in the State of Colorado.
