Purpose Statement
The Director of Surgical Services is a full-time position responsible for the leadership and oversight of all surgical services programs at Pikes Peak State College. This includes the Surgical Technology program, the Sterile Processing program, and the development of any future programs in the surgical services discipline.
The Director ensures program compliance with accreditation bodies, curriculum standards, institutional policies, and workforce needs. The role also encompasses instructional quality, faculty oversight, clinical coordination, budget and resource management, and ongoing program improvement.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completed Associate Degree, preferably with a concentration in surgical technology.
- Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential through the NBSTSA (NCCA-accredited).
- Five years of experience (within the past ten years) in the scrub role or as a surgical technology instructor, or a combination of both.
- Documented education or experience in instructional methodology, curriculum design, and program planning.
- Participate in an ARC/STSA accreditation workshop at least once every five years.
- Knowledge of HSPA testing and certification pathways (e.g., CRCST).
- Meet the following Clinical Coordinator qualifications, if also serving in that role:
- Minimum of three years of documented experience in the scrub role, as an instructor, or both (within the last five years).
- Knowledge of the program curriculum and evaluation of student learning/performance.
Professional level experience is defined by the Colorado Division of Human Resources: A position that involves the exercise of discretion, analytical skill, judgment, personal accountability, and responsibility for creating, developing, integrating, applying, or sharing an organized body of knowledge. Colorado revised statute (C.R.S. 24-50-135(1) allows colleges to exempt positions from the State Personnel Classified System that are determined to be professional level work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completed Master’s degree in education, healthcare, or related field from a Higher Learning Commission (HLC) accredited institution.
- Experience teaching both Surgical Technology and Sterile Processing programs in a postsecondary setting.
- Proven leadership in accreditation and compliance reporting, including self-studies and site visit coordination.
- Experience coordinating CRCST certification preparation and clinical hour documentation.
- Background in building interdisciplinary simulations or shared learning environments.
- Budgeting, purchasing, and grant management experience in academic or clinical settings.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated success in launching or expanding surgical services or allied health programs.

Essential Functions
- Serve as Director for the Surgical Technology program in accordance with CAAHEP and ARC/STSA requirements.
- Ensure the Sterile Processing program aligns with HSPA test prep and testing guidelines, including certification readiness.
- Provide leadership for the development and oversight of all surgical services programs, including future offerings.
- Manage curriculum development, academic planning, and program assessment in line with accreditation and industry standards.
- Lead continuous quality improvement efforts for all programs using data-informed processes.
- Participate in an ARC/STSA accreditation workshop at least once every five years.
- Supervise and evaluate program faculty and staff; promote inclusive, high-impact instructional practices.
- Coordinate student clinical education in accordance with Clinical Coordinator responsibilities:
- Coordination of all clinical education activities;
- Oversight and supervision of student clinical experiences;
- Documentation of evaluation and progression of clinical performance toward competence;
- Continuous quality review and improvement of clinical learning experiences;
- Academic oversight of clinical curriculum development and planning;
- Orientation of site personnel who supervise or instruct students to the program’s clinical expectations;
- Assignment of students to clinical sites.
- Responsibilities may also include didactic and laboratory instruction, clinical instruction, and guidance of clinical instructors.
- Cultivate and maintain strong community, hospital, and clinical partnerships to support student placement and job pipelines.
- Lead program reporting for institutional effectiveness, grant accountability, and accreditation.
- Manage program budgets, instructional resources, and equipment procurement.
- The Program Director may also serve as Clinical Coordinator, provided all qualifications for both roles are met.
General Duties, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Set program goals and strategic initiatives aligned with accreditation requirements, college mission, and healthcare workforce needs.
- Serve as the primary contact for CAAHEP, ARC/STSA, and HSPA correspondence, compliance, and reporting.
- Engage with advisory boards to inform and guide program growth and updates.
- Monitor certification, accreditation, and workforce trends across surgical services.
- Participate in grant writing and implementation to support and expand programs.
- Support recruitment, student advising, and retention initiatives.
- Represent surgical services programs at institutional meetings, public events, and statewide collaborations.
- Strong understanding of surgical services education, including classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction.
- Working knowledge of CAAHEP and ARC/STSA accreditation standards for Surgical Technology programs.
- Familiarity with HSPA testing requirements and CRCST certification processes.
- Ability to design, assess, and revise health science curricula based on regulatory standards and workforce needs.
- Skill in faculty mentorship, supervision, and performance evaluation.
- Effective leadership, planning, and organizational skills across multiple program areas.
- Commitment to equity and inclusive practices in health education.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to manage program budgets and ensure proper resource allocation.
- Proficiency in managing accreditation reports, outcomes data, and student assessments.
