The position of Part-Time Advisor exists to provide professional advising related to educational, and career related decision making, focusing on academic advising for Career & Technical Education (CTE) degrees and certificates, transfer degrees, and various courses of study.  This position will also provide general academic advising to include support functions for college initiatives/programs related to student success. Advisors will manage and coordinate an assigned student caseload and collaborate with relevant departmental personnel to ensure appropriate educational planning to meet academic and career goals. All responsibilities are designed to advance retention practices, graduation rates, and overall student success across the institution.

This is a temporary part-time hourly position, not to exceed 28 hours per week.   

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Experience working with students in a secondary, post-secondary, workforce, or adult education setting.

Essential Functions

Academic and Career Advising

  • Manages assigned student caseload including long-term planning and appropriate referrals.
  • Provides general academic advising in person and via synchronous and asynchronous technologies to new and continuing students, to include: reviewing career plans, evaluating and interpreting placement test scores, assigning or changing faculty advisors, and recommending coursework.
  • Teaches students to register using MyPPSC Portal or EAB Navigate for classes based on student’s needs and prerequisite status.
  • Utilizes student records systems to gather information and record appropriate contact notations.
  • Prepares and interprets degree audits to determine student’s progress toward academic goals.
  • Collaborates with appropriate faculty and staff to support assigned student populations and programs.
  • Maps comprehensive academic and career plans for individual students, based upon understanding of program requirements, student’s life situation, and career and personal goals. 
  • Ensures that students understand four-year transfer options, partnerships, and other resources.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to other college student services areas in support of students’ academic and personal needs.
  • Documents student interactions in accordance with department and institution policies to support accountability and program assessment.
  • Ensures that all relevant advising and given career information is up to date including but not limited to: admissions requirements, new programs and course changes, important dates, college-wide initiatives, and transfer requirements and options.
  • Coordinates referrals to other college and community resources as appropriate.
  •  Providing short-term individual and career advising to assist students with career, educational, and employment decision making; coordinating referrals to other college and community resources as appropriate.

Supporting Departmental and Institutional Initiatives

  • Assists with special events, follow-up, and other service initiatives.
  • Collaborates with internal and external partners to provide equity based, culturally competent, efficient, and fair services.
  • Supports continuous assessment and improvement of processes affecting student enrollment and success metrics.

General Duties, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Cultural Competency: Strong understanding of and commitment to diversity and multiculturalism. Demonstrated evidence of applying these concepts effectively in the workplace. 
  • Customer Service: Ability to provide high-level customer service, in English and Spanish, to individuals and groups in-person, over the phone, via email, and text-message through utilizing excellent communication and organizational skills. 
  • Higher Education Knowledge: Familiarity with student services in higher education, with knowledge of student development and learning theories. 
  • Teamwork and Independence: Ability to professionally and tactfully interact, communicate, establish rapport, and work collaboratively with a wide variety of constituents, including students, faculty, staff, and community members and organizations. Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction. 
  • Technology Proficiency: Demonstrated experience with student information systems and customer relationship management systems. Daily proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including designing, creating, and maintaining forms, reference materials, databases, and training resources. 
  • Project Management: Aptitude for effectively prioritizing and managing multiple projects, ensuring deadlines are met without compromising quality. 
  • Location and Hours Flexibility: Willing to work occasional evenings and Saturdays, and work at all PPSC campuses and other locations to accommodate programming needs.

Must be a State of Colorado resident or able to relocate to Colorado prior to first date of employment.  All work must be performed in the State of Colorado.
