The Student Involvement & Leadership Specialist supports the mission of the Department of Student Engagement & Leadership (SEL) at Pikes Peak State College (PPSC) by promoting student leadership development and meaningful campus involvement. Reporting to the Director of Student Engagement & Leadership, this position plays a key role in advancing SEL’s core areas, including civic engagement, student organization development, intersectional leadership education, and campus-wide event coordination. The Specialist oversees the annual student club recognition process, providing comprehensive officer and advisor training, coordinating relevant policies and procedures, and guiding the development and growth of student organizations. This role also includes planning and executing recruitment events, supporting club functions, facilitating access to funding, and advising on fundraising strategies. In addition, the Specialist supervises student staff and ensures they are equipped to support a vibrant, inclusive campus life experience.

The Specialist must be a dynamic, responsive, and caring leader capable of balancing multiple priorities, adapting to changing needs, and working independently while supporting student autonomy and decision-making.

The college offers the possibility for alternative work arrangements such as flexplace, remote work, or flextime scheduling upon completion of training and department needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution OR completed associate degree with two years of professional level experience performing similar duties to those described for this position OR four years of professional level experience performing similar duties to those described for this position.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment; must demonstrate cultural sensitivity.
  • Experience with computer and software applications relating to office management, including word processing, spreadsheets, and email.

Professional level experience is defined by the Colorado Division of Human Resources: A position that involves the exercise of discretion, analytical skill, judgment, personal accountability, and responsibility for creating, developing, integrating, applying, or sharing an organized body of knowledge.  Colorado revised statute (C.R.S. 24-50-135(1) allows colleges to exempt positions from the State Personnel Classified System that are determined to be professional level work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed Master’s degree in Education, Higher Education Leadership, Sociology, Multicultural Studies, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in program development, analysis, data collection, and assessment.
  • Experience in student leadership development, student organization support, or civic engagement initiatives.
  • Workshop facilitation, public speaking, and training experience for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively while empowering students to take initiative and make independent decisions.
  • Knowledge of campus and community referral resources.
  • Experience collecting student data, reporting, record keeping, assessments and confidentiality.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak fluent Spanish.

Essential Functions  

Student Organization, Leadership Development, and Civic Engagement

  • Manage the annual recognition process for student organizations and lead training programs for officers and advisors.
  • Serve as a liaison between clubs and organization membership and advisors.
  • Advise students on the recognition process, organizational development, program planning, campus resources, and relevant policies, procedures, and guidelines ensuring that they remain in compliance.
  • Assist sustainability coordinator with leadership training for student officers and advisors, enhancing skills in teamwork, organization, and advocacy.
  • Assist sustainability coordinator with monthly meetings with club leaders and provides on-going training to provide resources for students across campus.
  • Maintain positive relationships with faculty/staff advisors from across the university; promote retention of club advisors and increases collaboration in small and large scale events across PPSC.
  • Coordinate and host at least two major student events, such as involvement fairs, recruitment events, club functions, leadership retreats, service projects, fundraising initiatives, and recognition ceremonies.
  • Lead civic engagement initiatives that promote student involvement in community service and democratic participation.
  • Assist with key civic engagement programs, including a nationally recognized nonpartisan student voting initiative in collaboration with the Director of Student Experience. 
  • Ensure civic engagement efforts are equitable, inclusive, and accessible to all students.
  • Develop programming that fosters a sense of belonging and strengthens student connections to campus life.

Supervision 

  • Assist with hiring and supervise student hourly employees, including the development of training, delegation of projects, and assessment of performance.
  • Assist with evaluating the job performance of staff, providing direction and assistance for improvement and professional growth.
  • Train student staff to support and advise registered clubs & organizations on their activities and provide guidance on day-to-day responsibilities, including, but not limited to annual recognition, new club creation, activity plans, space reservations, etc.
  • Manage hourly employee schedules including monitoring and tracking hours, coverage, and the Timesheet System.
  • Cultivate and supervise student hourly employees in the development and implementation of programs and operations, including social media, outreach, community-building, and educational events.
  • Assist with mentoring student hourly employees, fostering leadership growth and professional development.
  • Positively and proactively contributing to the educational and professional development of student staff in club management, wellbeing, leadership, DEI and future readiness.
  • Assist with co-advising for the Student Government Association when needed.

Department Operations 

  • Develop internal and external communication materials for events and outreach.
  • Updating and maintaining all relevant documents, resources, recognized clubs & organization database, trainings, presentations, website and other relevant virtual/digital spaces to engage registered club & organization officers and their advisors.
  • Market, advertise, and promote trainings, leadership development and civic engagement opportunities.
  • Assist with assessment efforts of the division and within the unit; including basic tracking of activities, program evaluation, and measurement of learning outcomes.
  • Assist with incorporating assessment data and best practices for learning outcomes, outcome measures, and evaluation procedures. 
  • Collect enrollment, retention, services usage, and other data as requested by the director, perform assessment and analysis of data to provide recommendations for programming; provide to the Director and other department leaders.
  • Monitor activity for clubs and organizations organizational codes, programming budgets, and spending for the programming initiatives.
  • Manage club funding allocations, ensuring equitable access to resources for all student organizations.
  • Manages funding requests throughout the academic year from all clubs and organizations; and subsequently, responsible for working with the Vice President of the Student Government Association in allocating funding to clubs and organizations at PPSC.
  • Design marketing materials and promotional graphics for programs and trainings, as well as printed and web-based educational materials for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Assists SEL staff in creating and hosting leadership development training for SGA student leaders.
  • Manage fleet vehicle reservations for the department for vehicles under SEL.

General Duties, Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Cultural competence and demonstrated evidence, understanding, and commitment to the concepts of diversity, multiculturalism, and their application in the workplace.
  • Serve as a liaison to designated community organizations that can provide key and critical support to PPSC’s student clubs and organizations.
  • Provide resources to students for peer-to-peer support programs.
  • Partner with college departments and resources to promote student success through academic support services.
  • Coordinate PPSC faculty and staff training programs for student development in conjunction with the Director.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to develop leadership training focused on career readiness, workforce transition, transferable skills, and soft skills.
  • Other departmental duties as assigned.
