The Assistant Director for Accessibility Services plays a vital leadership role in ensuring equitable access to academic and campus resources for students with disabilities. This position supports the Director in overseeing departmental operations, developing inclusive programming, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. The Assistant Director will work directly with students; supervise staff, collaborate with campus partners, and assist in creating a culture of inclusion and accessibility across the college. In supporting the Director, the Assistant Director will demonstrate a strong commitment to student access; value diversity through involvement, universal design, and participation in institutional projects and initiatives, and have a deep understanding of disability rights and inclusive practices.

The college offers the possibility for alternative work arrangements such as flexplace, remote work, or flextime scheduling upon completion of training and department needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education, Health Care, Human Services, Psychology, Special Education, Social Work, Sociology, Vocational Rehabilitation, or closely related field
  • Knowledge of ADA, Section 504, and FERPA as they relate to postsecondary education with proven practical application as appropriate to postsecondary disability services.
  • Two years of documented professional level experience providing educational accommodation services to include assistive technology or instructing people with disabilities.
  • Two years of documented professional level experience providing training or support with assistive technology and current assistive hardware and software.

Professional level experience is defined by the Colorado Division of Human Resources: A position that involves the exercise of discretion, analytical skill, judgment, personal accountability, and responsibility for creating, developing, integrating, applying, or sharing an organized body of knowledge.  Colorado revised statute (C.R.S. 24-50-135(1) allows colleges to exempt positions from the State Personnel Classified System that are determined to be professional level work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed Master's degree in Counseling, Education, Health Care, Human Services, Psychology, Special Education, Social Work, Sociology, Vocational Rehabilitation, or closely related field
  • Two or more years of experience supervising professional staff in a higher education setting.
  • Four or more years of experience in a disability services department working directly with students with disabilities in a post-secondary institution.
  • One or more years of experience using current operating systems, developing, and maintaining administrative applications for collecting, analyzing and reporting departmental data.
  • One or more years of experience providing instruction or support for accommodative application software, assistive technology and alternative format production.
  • Bilingual skills or multilingual skills, inclusive of ASL.

Essential Functions 

Supervision

  • Supervise and train Accessibility Services staff, including accommodation specialists, proctors, note-takers, and interpreters to increase productivity, professionalism, and proficiency.
  • Support the development and maintenance of departmental procedures, policies, and data systems (e.g., AIM or other accommodation management systems).
  • Assist in budget planning, report generation, and assessment efforts to measure program effectiveness and student outcomes.
  • Stay current with legal updates, trends, and best practices in disability services and post-secondary accommodation.
  • Generate appropriate reports, surveys, and questionnaires for annual assessment and evaluation periods for the department.
  • Responsible for all records and record keeping related to Accessibility Services, complying with FERPA regulations and other relevant laws.
  • Collect, analyze data, and assist the Director prepare reports and presentations on program activities and outcomes on student services utilization and program effectiveness.
  • Provide leadership for strategic planning, design, development, and implementation of disability services, programs, and training for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of departmental procedures.
  • Participate in professional development activities to stay current on best practices in disability services.
  • Serve as acting Director in the absence of the Director.
  • Assist the Director with managing daily operations of the Accessibility Services office, including case management, staff supervision, and coordination of services.
  • Acquire/purchase equipment needed to meet accommodation requirements of students.
  • Maintain and coordinate the department’s purchasing and procurement processes. Ensure compliance with PPSC and Colorado Community College System (CCCS) procurement procedures.

 

Student Support & Compliance 

  • Ensure that purchased technologies meet ADA, Section 508, and WCAG accessibility standards.
  • Oversee the tracking, maintenance, and lifecycle of assistive technology assets maintaining accurate records of acquisitions, deployment, and usage of AT resources.
  • Provide guidance and support to students in the use of assistive technological devices and software.
  • Maintain and update knowledge of current assistive technology trends and best practices.
  • Collaborate with IT services to ensure the accessibility of campus technology resources.
  • Mentor, supervise and evaluate AT lab coordinator to maintain a current technological skill set and best practices in pedagogy.
  • Provide leadership in the interactive process to determine reasonable accommodation for students with disabilities in compliance with ADA, Section 504, and other applicable laws.
  • Review records and meet with students to assess disability-related needs of students to determine and develop appropriate academic accommodation.
  • Provide guidance and support to students on accessing and utilizing accommodation effectively.
  • Assist students with resolving accessibility-related barriers in the academic and co-curricular environments.

Faculty Collaboration

  • Educate faculty and staff on disability awareness, inclusive teaching practices, and the effective implementation of student accommodations.
  • Collaborate with faculty to develop and implement reasonable and effective accommodation for students in the classroom and online learning environments.
  • Through training and collaboration, provide direct support for instructional staff and academic & administrative staff regarding accessibility best practices and implementation of accommodations.

Outreach and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with other campus departments and community agencies to ensure comprehensive support for students with disabilities promoting disability awareness and inclusion.
  • Participate in campus-wide initiatives related to student support services, and retention strategies for students with disabilities.
  • Consult with community and campus resources regarding student issues/crises and refer students to community and campus resources.
  • Develop opportunities for on-going programming and community building, educating the campus community about Accessibility Services and outreach.

  • Proficient computer and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex tasks and meet deadlines.
