The Lead Reference and Research Librarian will provide the vision and creativity to lead library services at Pikes Peak State College in library related programing, classroom and instructional support, and future development. The Lead Reference and Research Librarian will be responsible for supervising a team of Reference and Instructional Research Specialists that serve students and faculty across multiple campuses. This position will also support divisional and institutional leadership by working collaboratively to administer and develop library services within the context of the Learning Commons framework and collections development in print and non-print areas. This position also supports the administration of the library services budget; evaluation of services and staff; and the development and monitoring of resources to ensure student learning and student success.

The college offers the possibility for alternative work arrangements such as flexplace, remote work, or flextime scheduling upon completion of training and department needs.

REPORTS TO: Associate Vice President of Academic Resources

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed Master's degree in Library Science or Media Technology or Information Science from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Two years of professional level work experience in library science, media, information technology, or academic library.
  • Supervision experience.
  • Two years of management experience and demonstrated leadership skills.

Professional level experience is defined by the Colorado Division of Human Resources: A position that involves the exercise of discretion, analytical skill, judgment, personal accountability, and responsibility for creating, developing, integrating, applying, or sharing an organized body of knowledge.  Colorado revised statute (C.R.S. 24-50-135(1) allows colleges to exempt positions from the State Personnel Classified System that are determined to be professional level work.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years of professional level work experience in library science, media, information technology, or academic library.
  • One or more years of supervision experience.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with a wide range of media/materials related to career and technical education in a college library.
  • Extensive database and internet searching experience.
  • Experience in developing and implementing WEB pages.
  • Demonstrated ability to relate effectively with faculty, staff, students, community agencies, and constituent groups.
  • Experience in bibliographic instruction in a library setting.
  • Post-secondary experience.

Salary range is $62,000.00 to $65,000.00 annual gross.  For full consideration, all application materials must be received by 4:00 p.m. on January 8, 2024.  Applications accepted until position is filled.

Essential Functions  

Program Administration and Supervision

  • Collaborate with departments and divisions across the college in the formulation of education policies as they pertain to library services.
  • Supervise all direct reports in the Reference and Instructional Research Team.
  • In coordination with the Learning Commons team, oversee library services at all campuses including reference, reserve, instructional databases, and the archives.
  • Work collaboratively with the Learning Commons team to develop and maintain policies and procedures to govern the activities within the Learning Commons spaces at each campus.
  • Maintain active cooperation with Colorado Community College System (CCS), local, regional, and national library networks.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Serve as a member of appropriate committees at the college and within the System.
  • Ensure that equitable practices are being developed and implemented that serve to increase student belonging and support the success of underserved populations at Pike Peak State College.
  • Collaborate with campus stakeholders in completing assessments and reports that align with library services.

Planning

  • Identify needs for personnel, space, and programs, developing both short and long-range plans and goals to meet these needs.
  • In collaboration with the Learning Commons team, support the development of physical and virtual collections to assure they adequately meet instructional objectives.
  • Support the institution in identifying grant and gift opportunities and the timely submission of grant and gift reports as they relate to library services.

Budget

  • In collaboration with the Associate Vice President of Academic Resources make recommendations on the cost and need for learning and teaching materials, operating expenses, auxiliary accounts, and capital funding. Manage library grants, gifts, and donations.
  • Investigate funding available from state, federal, and Foundation sources, writing grant proposals to supplement appropriate funding.

Subject Matter Expert

  • Keep current on library databases and all other library-related information.
  • Evaluate and recommend sites, updates, and improvements to library information links.
  • Provide expertise on and work with Information Technology Support Services on keeping library sites current and effective.
  • Provide consultant services to local school districts and other libraries upon request.
  • Ensure that bibliographic instruction is effective and available to faculty and students.

  • Keep current on library databases and all other library-related information.
  • Develop library services within the context of the Learning Commons framework and collections development in print and non-print areas.
  • Development and monitoring of resources to ensure student learning and student success.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
